Making Excuses Before Performing

Today is our Sunday "Words of Wisdom" and our topic is going to be "Making excuses before performing."

I have taught thousands of people ukulele, guitar, music theory, and singing. I'm also a big believer in making my students perform in front of the class.

Although many students are nervous, some to the point of shaking, but they always grow as musicians and people when they face their performance fears.

I do notice that some students admit defeat before they even perform one note in front of the class.

I can't tell you how many times I hear things such as, "I didn't have a lot of time to practice", "I've a little under the weather", "I'm really terrible at this song."

Although they think that it is letting the class know that, "if I suck this is the reason why."

But I believe that it is much more harmful than that. I think it is not only lowering the expectations of the audience but it is telling your mind, body, and soul that you're not going to perform well.

Why are we qualify our performance by making excuses? What we are doing is setting ourselves up for failure.

In this video I'm going to discuss some of these pitfalls and ways we can deal with them. I want to give you some tips that will help you grow your confidence and "crush it" the next time you play ukulele, guitar, or sing for a group of people.
