How do you Tune a Ukulele?

When I was in school, my teacher always used to tell us that every subject has some chapters which are termed as most important. You cannot learn mathematics without learning the basics of arithmetic like addition, subtraction, multiplication and more.

Similarly, when it comes to learning ukulele, the topic that can be regarded as the most important is the ‘Chapter of Tuning’. This is one of the basic fundamentals that are required to learn the ukulele.

When I deliver the first lecture to my students, I always emphasize the importance of tuning, and why they should learn it thoroughly. Lately, I have found that there are many people who are confused when it comes to choosing the tuning method. In fact, this is one of the common queries of all the students at the beginner level.

So, here I am going to talk about the 2 basic methods to tune a ukulele:

The two basic ways of tuning the ukulele are by ear or with the help of a chromatic tuner.

1. By Ear

This method is normally used by the old-school people who like doing stuff manually. Here you have to take the reference of other instruments like a piano and match the notes of both the instruments. This is an expert practice, and it takes a lot of time to get comfortable with.

If you are a beginner, then this may appear to be a hard technique. But for the learning purpose, you can give it a try and cross-check the results with other tuning methods. Trying it sometimes can help you achieve mastery in it.

2. Chromatic Tuner

Nowadays, chromatic tuners are highly popular among the ukulele players. This is because they are easy and fast. A chromatic tuner senses the pitch of the strings and gives you the reading on the screen. This allows you to easily adjust the tuning peg without much confusion.

This method is recommended for everybody who is at the beginner or advanced stage, as there is very less margin of error in it.

Other than these methods there are other methods also like using online apps and software. But as a ukulele player, you should learn the basics, if you want to become a complete expert.
