1.    Not a mini guitar:

Many people in the world think that a ukulele is just like a mini guitar which is totally wrong. A ukulele has the G string one octave higher as compared to the guitar.

Again the people, who have never seen a ukulele from close, think that it has strings exactly like a guitar. Actually, a ukulele only has 4 strings, unlike the guitar which has six and even more in some cases.

3.    Fewer strings do not mean easy playing:

It is again a myth that playing ukulele is easier than guitar. It totally depends on an individual and his approach. Some people may find playing ukulele harder than the guitar. So before starting...

How I Got 1000 YouTube Subscribers

It's funny to think that several months ago I remember being at 276 Subscribers and seeing other YouTube Ukulele Channels, like The Ukulele Teacher, and wondering how the heck did he get to over 900,000 subscribers?

Well, I should have guessed what the formula was, I mean people have told me but I guess I didn't want to believe it.

Somehow I expected my channel to go from 276 subscribers to 1,000,000 overnight, but it doesn't happen that way.

Here is what I have done to help the success of my YouTube Channel.

  1. Post Great Content - posting videos that provide value to people's lives.

  2. Post Regularly - posting at least 3-5 videos a week, especially early on really helps build your audience and I think YouTube likes when channels post great content regularly.

  3. Titles - How you name your titles really affects how your video shows up on searches. Remember people like you and me are searching YouTube, so when we want to learn how to play "Free Fallin" by Tom...

How I Conquered My Performance Fears

confidence performing Nov 10, 2017

I have been fortunate in my career as a musician.

I have worked with some big names in the business (Josh Groban, Weezer, Robbie Krieger, Los Angeles Philharmonic) and been put in some fairly high pressure situations.

How do you respond when your in high pressure situations?

Is being a good performer something that you born with or is it a skill that you can develop?

Even though this year alone I have done well over 200 live videos on Facebook and YouTube, I haven't always had such confidence when it came to playing in front of others.

When I first starting dating my wife, Heather, back in 1997 I was an undergraduate at San Diego State University. I was a guitar player studying Music Education and Jazz Studies and was dedicating every second I could to practicing.

Although I had played in several bands up to this point including some original rock bands and even a Top 40 band (hopefully that video never surfaces), I never played solo in front of people.

I was new to the jazz...

Making Excuses Before Performing

Today is our Sunday "Words of Wisdom" and our topic is going to be "Making excuses before performing."

I have taught thousands of people ukulele, guitar, music theory, and singing. I'm also a big believer in making my students perform in front of the class.

Although many students are nervous, some to the point of shaking, but they always grow as musicians and people when they face their performance fears.

I do notice that some students admit defeat before they even perform one note in front of the class.

I can't tell you how many times I hear things such as, "I didn't have a lot of time to practice", "I've a little under the weather", "I'm really terrible at this song."

Although they think that it is letting the class know that, "if I suck this is the reason why."

But I believe that it is much more harmful than that. I think it is not only lowering the expectations of the audience but it is telling your mind, body, and soul that you're not going to perform well.

Why are we...
